Immunization Details

  • Link to CDC recommendations
  • Here are the vaccines we have chosen to receive:
    • Routine vaccinations and boosters (MMR, DPT)
    • Hep A
    • Hep B
    • Polio
    • Meningitis
    • Typhoid (PIILS instead of shot, lasts 5 years, got Rx from my doctor)
    • Yellow fever (couldn’t get at doctor – had to go to Shots, Etc.)
    • Also, we always get a prescription from our doctors for malaria pills to take before, during, and after trip
  • It’s ultimately up to you and your doctor to decide which vaccines you will receive before travel
  • We have chosen to receive all of the recommended vaccines except for the rabies vaccine. (It’s pretty unlikely that you’ll be bitten by a dog while you’re there.) We’ve been able to get all of the shots through our doctor’s office except for the yellow fever vaccine. We went to Shots, Etc. for that one.  Our insurance covered everything except yellow fever, as well. Additionally, we do choose to take malaria medicine when we travel even though the risk is low in Addis Ababa.  But it’s just not worth the risk!
